What are crowns and bridges?
If any of your teeth are weak, damaged or missing, our highly experienced team at Esplanade Dental Centre can restore them with dental crowns or bridges. Crowns and bridges are fixed solutions to replace or repair missing or damaged teeth. Crowns and bridges are restorative procedures that can help return your smile to its natural state. Both crowns and most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices that are considered to be long-lasting and durable. Unlike removable prosthetics such as dentures, which you need to take out and clean daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants with a special bonding agent, requiring only your usual brushing and flossing to maintain them day to day.

What is a dental crown?
Crowns are custom manufactured and used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function.
Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. The alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for your rear teeth where they are less visible and most of your chewing occurs. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.
Crowns may be recommended to replace a large filling when there is not enough tooth remaining, cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment, cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth, cover a dental implant, attach a bridge, restore a fractured tooth, and protect a weak tooth from fracturing.
What is the difference between a dental crown and dental bridge?
Dental crowns are most commonly used to entirely cap or cover a damaged tooth or implant. Bridges, on the other hand, are solely used to cover a space if you’re missing one or more teeth. Bridges require two crowns – one on either end – and a bridge of replacement teeth that rest in the area of the gums where there is tooth loss. The crowns at the ends of a bridge can fuse to existing teeth that will need to be filed down by a dentist in order to fit correctly. Otherwise, a dentist can attach the bridge to dental implants.
Replacing teeth is not only a cosmetic choice but they can be vital in maintaining your oral health. Gaps in areas of tooth loss can cause your other teeth to begin rotating or shifting into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. Missing teeth can also even lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders which causes pain and compromised movement of the jaw joint and the surrounding muscle. What are dental bridges?
If you’re missing one or more teeth, you may notice a difference in chewing and speaking. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. A dental bridge is a prosthetic device spanning the space where the teeth are missing, which can help restore your smile and bite, and assist with speech.
Sometimes called a “fixed partial denture”, a bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth and literally “bridges” the gap where one or more teeth used to be. It is mounted onto existing surrounding teeth or implants and cemented into shape, bridging the gap to create a full and natural-looking smile. Bridges can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials.
Unlike a removable bridge like a denture which you have to take out and clean, a fixed bridge is a permanent solution that doesn't require any special daily maintenance. Just brush and floss like normal!
